Thinking agency and generative AI
When learners read, write and reason with AI, who is doing the knowing? I am interested in cognitive offloading, and in how learners and users keep ownership of their own thinking.
Researcher in technology and learning. How do digital systems change the way people learn and think?
I study how digital systems change the way people learn and think, and I build the tools to see it.
I trained as an engineer and computer scientist at Bombay University, then spent seven years at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences studying how technology reaches government schools. On CLIx, I ran the Open edX learning platforms, wrote interactive maths tools and trained teachers in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Mizoram. I evaluated ITE, a project-based learning programme by TISS and Tata Trusts that ran in government schools across 11+ states, and co-authored its outcome studies. I also designed the research for AGSE, a study of 1:1 Chromebooks in two schools in Chennai and Hisar. Most recently, I led field research for the Digital Classroom Project in more than 60 government schools in Madhya Pradesh.
Since 2024 I have managed the Safexpress Centre for Data, Learning and Decision Sciences at Ashoka University. There, mathematicians, statisticians and computer scientists study AI/ML models on state-of-the-art computing infrastructure, and I get a glimpse of that research from behind the scenes.
In my spare time I help organise T4E, the international conference on technology for education, and I have worked with Tata Trusts as an evaluation consultant, writing the impact evaluation reports for its ITE programme across 100+ government schools and 10,000+ students in the flood-prone Terai region of eastern Uttar Pradesh. I am also drawn to mathematical art, especially tessellations.
My questions have shifted from whether a technology works in a classroom to what it does to the people using it: how generative AI changes who does the thinking, how communities form on messaging platforms, and how culture lives in digital images. I am looking for PhD positions starting in 2027.
Five questions I keep returning to.
When learners read, write and reason with AI, who is doing the knowing? I am interested in cognitive offloading, and in how learners and users keep ownership of their own thinking.
Learning now happens across networks of people, platforms and machines rather than inside one classroom. I ask how knowledge forms and travels through these networks, and what changes when AI becomes one of the connections.
Devices, connectivity and language in government schools and rural communities across the Global South, and who is left out when a new technology arrives.
How users build communities on messaging and social platforms: who speaks, who replies, and how the rhythm of a group follows the rhythm of their lives.
Computational methods for reading images, film and archives, to understand why certain forms move people.
Fieldwork, platforms and evaluations, newest first.
Focus groups with SHG women and interviews with NRLM officials in the Takula and Dhaula Devi blocks of Uttarakhand, on phone ownership, banking, UPI and selling products online.
An assessment of a 1:1 Chromebook programme in two secondary government schools, in Chennai and Hisar. I drafted the research proposal, built the data collection tools and analysed classroom practice.
A study of engagement with digital classrooms in more than 60 upper primary and secondary government schools. I led field data collection and supervised the research team across both districts.
A project-based learning programme with technology, run by TISS and Tata Trusts in government schools across 11+ states. I carried out its evaluation in all of them and co-authored its outcome studies. Later, as a consultant, I wrote the impact evaluation reports for 100+ schools and 10,000+ students in the flood-prone Terai region of eastern Uttar Pradesh, including coding skills and IT integration.
Research on whether digital badges motivate teachers' professional learning. I helped design the badge specifications and piloted Badgr for credentialing at scale.
I ran the Open edX platforms behind CLIx and TISSx, wrote JavaScript tools for maths modules on linear equations and proportional reasoning, trained government teachers in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Mizoram, and analysed learner data from TISSx teacher courses.

Small tools I have built, for my own research and for the research community.
Turns an exported WhatsApp chat into activity charts, a reply network and measures of conversation dynamics such as turn-taking, burstiness and weekly routine. It grew out of my study of teacher communities. The chat never leaves your device.
Checks a paper against the Springer proceedings template before submission: page limits by paper type, author block, ORCID check digits, headings, figures and references, with plain-language fixes.
I take on consulting work where careful fieldwork and good data both matter. Remote, or in the field anywhere in India.
Impact evaluations, from instruments, sampling and field plans to reports that funders and governments can use.
Surveys, focus groups and interviews, coded in MAXQDA or Atlas.ti, with statistics in Stata, SPSS or Python.
Learning-platform logs, engagement measures and analysis of messaging-group data, turned into findings people can act on.
Small web tools built for one study's question, private by design, documented so your team can keep using them.
